Vestibular and Balance
Vestibular Rehab, Balance & Falls
Loss of balance or dizziness is the second most common complaint heard in doctor's offices today. As many as 76 million Americans will experience these symptoms at some time during their lives. Although very common, acute or chronic problems with equilibrium may indicate serious health risks, or limit a person's everyday living.
Regaining Our Balance...
Both vestibular rehabilitation and balance retraining are exciting and successful new treatments for dizziness and balance disorders. Thousands of patients throughout the country are getting better and returning to normal lives because of these programs.
Vestibular rehabilitation and balance retraining through a process called adaptation and compensation, actually reprogram the vestibular systemÕs connections within the brain on how to adjust to the imbalance. The type of therapy depends on the cause of the equilibrium problem.
As always, proper diagnosis must precede initiation of any of these four general categories of therapy. One or more of the categories may be used. The goal is always to make the patient better as quickly as possible.
